Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)

Overview

A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is a personalized, written plan that outlines specific, positive strategies to reduce challenging behaviors and build more appropriate, helpful ones. It is developed based on the results of a Functional Behavior Assessment. The plan emphasizes teaching a person skills and adjusting environments, rather than relying solely on consequences.

Purpose

BIPs are particularly valuable when behavior patterns have become stressful or difficult to manage for families, schools, or treatment teams. A well-designed plan brings all caregivers and staff onto the same page with consistent, supportive responses. This coordinated approach can create a calmer, more predictable environment and help the individual feel safer and more successful.

Our Approach

At Segel Psychological Center, BIPs are designed to be practical, realistic, and closely tailored to the individual and setting, rather than generic or “one-size-fits-all.” Clinicians take time to explain the plan in detail. The overarching aim is to support meaningful, lasting behavior change while preserving the person’s dignity and well-being.
