Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA)

Overview

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a structured process used to understand why a behavior is occurring. It examines what tends to happen before and after the behavior and how others respond. The goal is to identify the function of the behavior so that more effective, respectful strategies can be developed.

Purpose

Parents, schools, or caregivers often request an FBA when a child, adolescent, or adult exhibits behaviors that disrupt learning, family life, or safety. Rather than relying on trial-and-error consequences, an FBA clarifies whether a behavior is serving to gain attention, avoid tasks, meet a sensory need, or fulfill another function. This insight often becomes a turning point, allowing teams to respond more calmly and effectively.

Our Approach

At Segel Psychological Center, clinicians use a collaborative, team-based approach to conducting FBAs. They listen closely to families and staff, review relevant records, and when possible, observe behavior in real-life settings. Assessment findings are translated into clear, practical explanations and recommendations that can be integrated into daily routines at home, school, or work.
